Timeless Classic.

When you hear Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, Les Miserables, Star Wars, and Pride and Prejudice, what do you think of? Most people would agree that these are classics. So what makes something “classic”? More specifically, what makes a book a classic? A classic is something memorable that pretty much anyone can relate to at any given point in time and the truths that it teaches are timeless.
One book that I consider to be a classic is Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Many schools across the United States are dropping this book from their curriculum for more “modern” literature. When I heard this I just stood there in shock for a moment contemplating. I asked myself, “How people could consider taking this “classic” piece of literature out of schools?” The book may not be “modern”, but just like the sky remains blue no matter how much time passes, the values this novel teaches and the impact it can have on your life stands relevant for any time period. It’s because it deals with problems and challenges everyone is constantly facing. It shows the true, sometimes ugly, side of human nature we all can relate to. No matter how much time passes, human nature doesn’t change.
Scout, the main character of the novel, teaches us that sometimes only the innocence of a child can see the truth. She says, “ Nah, Jem, I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks.” She is able to break off from society’s perspective and realize that we are all equal human beings- not groups of people separated by race, skin color, or culture. When Tome Robinson, a black man accused of rape who is innocent, is sentenced and killed just because of his skin color, Scout understands the saying, “Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.” She sees the cruelty and injustice that is shown towards Tom Robinson, a symbol of the “Mockingbird” in the novel.

Each page of the novel leads Scout into a deeper level of moral conscience. By the end of the book, Scout realizes that someone she doesn’t understand, the book’s recluse- Boo Radley, is a person of compassion and worthy of love. At the end when Boo saves her and Jem from Bob Ewell, who tries to kill them, Scout discards society’s assumptions and sees Boo for who he really is. At the end she says, “he was real nice…” and Atticus, her wise father replies, “ Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them.” Scout realizes that someone she does not understand, her neighbor Boo Radley, is a person of compassion and worthy of love.

This book is definitely one of my favorite reading assignments for school I have ever had. Not only was the story very interesting and fun to read, but the lessons about the importance of family, forgiveness, not judging, and equality are priceless.
The lessons on justice and equality from the 1960’s still apply now in the 21st century. They are etched into my heart and mind , and I encourage all schools to allow their students to experience the same unforgettable journey of reading To Kill a Mockingbird. You won’t regret it.
(That’s a promise.)

Working Moms and a More than just a Pope.

"Poll: More working moms say full-time work ideal for them; economy at play"

I am 17 years old and I have been raised in a single parent home since I was 12.Is it difficult emotionally, mentally, and financially? Of course, it's extremely hard! But does that mean that my mom should be working full time to support us? In my opinion, my answer is a resounding no! Why? Although having a higher income would make life significantly easier, I don't believe it would necessarily make the quality of life at home better. My mother works part time because she has to pay the bills but we have to make enormous sacrifices so that she is able to only work part time. We have to live without many of life's luxuries, but it is a price we are willing to pay because no amount of money can replace the nurturing presence of a mother in a home. Although there are certain times when it is necessary for a mother to work, I believe it is our duty as women to ensure that we put our children's needs before financial needs.

I definitely agree that the church is way more than just the Pope. Like the article states, “Christians believe that it is God who ultimately guides worldly affairs, a claim the secular media simply dismiss.” Is it just the pope that Catholics believe in? No. They believe that God is superior and he guides and leads the Pope to do what is right for the church. The media should not be so concerned on whether or not the Pope will lead the church to prosperity or disaster, because it is ultimately the people’s personal standing with God that will determine that.  We should be more concerned how the individual people of the church will lead the church not just one man- the Pope.

Modern Day Issues

"Suicide, With No Warning"

Click Here: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/sunday-review/suicide-with-no-warning.html?pagewanted=all

Why do suicides happen? There are many different contributing factors involved in suicides. The main concern should not be with “what” weapon the suicide was committed, but for what reason. The article states, “Up to 50 percent of people who attempt suicide make the decision to do so within minutes to an hour before they act, “
They may have made the decision to take their lives minutes before, but are we naïve enough to believe that someone would wake up perfectly fine one morning and minutes later take their own life?  When I think of a suicide I don’t just think of a single time event? No, it makes me contemplate what could have been going on in the person’s life or head long before they attempted ending their life.
I again want to emphasize the importance of solving the mystery of suicide and fix the underlying problem. Instead of trying to regulate guns and weapons for the purpose of stopping suicides, we as a nation need to discover solve societal problems and strive to figure out the underlying reason behind suicide and do everything we can to prevent this rising epidemic in our country.

"It's Time To Overthrow DOMA"

Clinton States, “I signed the Defense of Marriage Act. Although that was only 17 years ago, it was a very different time.”  Do true principles change over time? Does the sky remain constantly blue or does it depend on its surroundings to determine its color? Just like the sky is and always will be blue, the passing or vetoing of laws will not change the definition of marriage. We may try and re-write what marriage is but it will not change in God’s eyes.
“On March 27, DOMA will come before the Supreme Court, and the justices must decide whether it is consistent with the principles of a nation that honors freedom, equality and justice above all, and is therefore constitutional.”
We are a nation that believes in equality, but we also need to stand for what is right. This is a key crossroad in America today that can determine our fate forever. What choice will we make? We need to respect and love everyone, but that does not mean that we should endorse wrong behavior. Times may change but right and truth will never change.

Elisa Huhem
            Punctually casual, enthusiastic, short, determined
Sisters: the lovely Camilla and Natasha Huhem. Brother: the unique, one and only Christopher Huhem
Love for God, sleep, and sunshine.
Who feels like taking a nap, going on a lovely adventure, and feels that the Black eyed Peas got a feeling. Who needs Lady Gaga to find some decent clothes, Justin beieber to learn how to sing, and Utah to figure out that it's ok to have spring and summer anytime soon.
Who fears failure, sharks, and the bottom of the ice-cream tub.
Who gives free hugs, love, and lots of smiles.
Who would like to see the wonders of Greece again, Gondolas in Italy, and peace in the world.
Who lives in Uath, in a house,in a simple little valley.
Who lives  under my bed? Who knows?
But that doesnt stop the girl under the covers from resting her dark messy locks on her pillow drifting into the land of dreams and possibility.
This girl dreams of all the things she can and will accomplish with God as her partner.
Sincerely,
Huhem
